Pat Catterson is most known for her work with Yvonne Rainer for whom she first performed in 1969 to 1971. When Rainer returned to choreography after her film career in 1999 Catterson returned to performing Rainer’s work until Catterson’s retirement from performing in 2018. This work took her on tour internationally and nationally as well as regular seasons in NYC

Of her final performance at MoMA Gia Kourlas wrote in the New York Times in her articles “The Kinetic Wisdom of Older Dancers”:

“The Judson collective, among other things, eschewed affectation and mannerism in performance, and for that reason Pat Catterson was an especially riveting sight. At 72, after 50 years dancing, she performed for the final time in a program of works by Yvonne Rainer at MoMA. Her grounded presence and lack of artificiality allowed movement to happen in such a direct, matter-of-fact way that it took on a sense of the ethereal.”

She has been designated as the primary transmitter of Rainer’s work, especially of her early work and, in this capacity has taught and staged Rainer’s work nationally and internationally.
